Marisa Butler was crowned Miss Maine USA 2016

Marisa Butler was crowned Miss Maine USA 2016 by outgoing titleholder Heather Elwell on November 29, 2015. Butler will have the opportunity to compete at the 2016 Miss USA Pageant where she hopes to be crowned by the reigning Miss USA Olivia Jordan from Oklahoma. Jessica Stewart was also crowned Miss Maine Teen USA 2016.

Few months ago, the 21-year-old and 5'9" tall queen was criticized for her unusual volunteer work which is shark fishing by catching them with rod and reel and tagging them while posing with swimsuit under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration program. When animal activists criticized photographs of Butler with sharks, she explained to reporters at the time that conservation is part of her pageant platform and that she hoped to change the public’s perception of the creatures.
